My name is J C Sum and I have had the good fortune of having a successful international career as a performing artiste & entertainer across a variety of high value markets for the past 20 years.
Based in Singapore, I am an illusionist & designer of original illusions with extensive international experience performing for corporate & special events, luxury cruise liners, theaters, showrooms and television.

I hope your research has corroborated that I am a working professional with a proven track record in the real world as well as a market leader in my specialized field in a large geographical location – the leading illusionist & illusion designer in Asia.
In the past 12 years, I have also produced a number of variety artistes (magicians, escape artists, fire artists & jugglers) who have become successful artistes in their own right, most notably ‘Magic Babe’ Ning, who rose to international fame and success in the magic world within a short two years of working with me.
In my career, I have interacted, worked with and observed many performing artistes of all levels from all corners of the world. I have noticed three common groups of performing artistes.
- Fantastic talented acts who are not monetizing their careers and maximizing their commercial potential
- Acts who have not reached a world-class level and do not understand why they are not more highly valued by clients, the industry and their peers
- Highly successful acts who have a good balance of artistic and mass appeal and are highly valued and financially rewarded in the market
The first two groups of performing artistes make up about 85% of all artistes in the marketplace. And it is these two groups that I think I can help and be of value to.
As I continue my personal journey as an international performing artiste, I also want to help other artistes build successful and sustainable careers in today’s volatile market. I want to teach performing artistes & entertainers how to be better at the business side of “show business”.
That was the reason I started the Backstage Business blog in Apr 2009, which was updated to the Backstage Business Academy in 2014.
In 2013, I wanted to do more so I started work on a comprehensive course with the goal of helping performing artistes & entertainers command a six figure income.
The course will be launched between July – Sept 2014 so check back for updates!
